Thaiconsent Art Exhibition x the FRIDA Young Feminist Fund
Opens Dec. 8 at Fathom Bookspace from 6:30pm. It can be reached by a short taxi ride from BTS Chong Nonsi or BRT Technic Krungthep.
The Thai Consent group aims to empower young women (and men) in the way they live/ construct their sexuality through different dimensions that the issue of consent provides. We believe that a better understanding of what is consent, how it is socially constructed and how it reflects the way we express our sexual relation, is part of the feminist struggle for gender justice and to stop gender-based violence.
Instead of a rape culture, we want to see a consent culture in which women own their sexuality regardless of age, sexual designation, race, gender expression and sexual orientation. So far, Thaiconset has been active online through our website https://thaiconsent.org/ and on social media with our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/thaiconsent/ with more than 40,000 followers, and our twitter counts more than 2,000 followers.
The exhibition’s goal:
- Thaiconsent group would like to initiate an art project that you bring into public discussion the issue of consent, gender equality and feminism. It would be a first feminist “artivist” scene in Thailand to exhibit young artists (of all genders)- amateurs and professionals- about the way they express their understanding of sexual consent and feminism.
- We would like to build up a sustainable working structure alongside this project. We expect that with this art project, we would gain more recognition and interest from other funders to continue in the future.
Expected impact and evaluation:
- With this art project, we expect to get more followers/ members on the issues on sexual consent, gender equality and feminism. This could be shown by the increased number of our social media followers and organic participation in our activities. Supporting the issues could also be monitored by a rising number of discussions online and offline.
- More interest from the public policy-makers or influencers in these issues. We can also monitor from their online and offline publications.
Art is viewed as an important tool we can use to change the mindset of people in society. We expect that this art project will inspire many individuals and organizations to create an “artivism” movement in Thai society.
